Rock salt and other salt-based ice melters contain sodium chloride or potassium chloride which can heat up to 175 degrees when exposed to water, ice, and low temperatures. Often these white pellets (crystals) sit on ice and snow surfaces for a long period before penetrating.

Simply put, for those that need this dumbed down further; Blaine basically got a miniature ball of jagged, blunt force covered in fire all up in his eye. And if it’s a deep scratch then I imagine the salt was embedded in his cornea.

Think of the eyeball as a knot of nerves and veins that travel to the brain. Short distance, I know. Which is why if you get something in your eye you’re almost always frantic to get it out as soon as possible. Because fucking Christ something is in your EYE and it’s the most terrible thing ever.

additionally i’d like to point out that rapid blinking is a reflex reaction to negative stimuli - if you get something in your eye, you blink excessively and your eyes ‘water’ in an involuntary attempt to expel the substance. i stress involuntary because there is nothing you can consciously do to stop it - put lemon juice in your eyes try to keep them open. it’s very difficult.

sodium and potassium chloride are hard, crystalline structures. to put it in context, structure of rock salt would have the consistency similar to that of very small pieces of glass. every time blaine blinks, they would have been scraped across his eyes - and his body would be trying very hard to expel them. so in summary, blaine’s body was gradually forcing tiny, sharp shards deeper into his eyes against his conscious will while he was lying on the ground screaming and there was absolutely nothing he could do about it.
